Future Internet Assembly (FIA) Ghent held on 16-17th Dec. 2010

During 16-17th December, 2010, the next in the series of FIA was held in Ghent, Belgium. For this event, there were two sessions organised related to trust and security by the trust and security caretakers1.

The INCO-Trust coordinator, Jim Clarke, chaired a session entitled "Privacy and citizenship". The session was two hours in length and was broken over two topics related to Privacy and citizenship. These two selected topics were: Topic 1, User/Citizen issues related to privacy and Topic 2, Economics of privacy. The keynotes and panelists were selected accordingly with expertise in these topics. Full descriptions of the topics can be found in the terms of reference of the session at the program section of the FIA Ghent web site.

The second session was entitled "Can the cloud be trusted" and was chaired by Volkmar Lotz of SAP. In this session, the main objective was the closer examination of Trust in a Future Internet (FI) that is made up of numerous solutions based on new paradigms of service offerings, including those in the context of cloud computing. One of major properties expected of the FI is to provide a platform for new businesses, which can only achieve value if there is sufficient trust in the infrastructures. The ‘cloud', in its different appearances as infrastructure / resource cloud, platforms as a service, or applications as a service, exemplifies potential trust challenges, which the session was designed in order to be examined in greater detail.

Further details of the sessions and the FIA Trust and Security caretakers reports on the sessions can be found here.
