Concept And Objectives

The INCO-TRUST Project responds to Call 1 from the European Commission for European excellence in secure, dependable and trusted ICT global infrastructures and partnerships. In particular, the S&T objectives of INCO-TRUST are highly relevant to Objective ICT-2007.1.4 Secure, dependable and trusted Infrastructures objectives, especially (e) Long term visions and research roadmaps; international cooperation and co-ordination with developed countries; and co-ordination of FP7 projects addressing security, dependability, privacy and related ethical issues across different challenges and objectives of this work programme.

There is significant investment and worldwide research activity aimed at creating complex networked systems that can be justifiably trusted to perform as expected: to be resilient; to remain dependable and secure, in spite of problems that they may experience; to be adaptable; and to be able to evolve in response to changed requirements and environments. Therefore, within FP7, the European Commission have a requirement for top level European researchers to develop global partnerships with their International peers in these areas.

The multi-year consultation and road mapping process across the TSD (Trust, Security and Dependability) technical community, and the programme offices of European Commission, US-National Science Foundation NSF, US-Department of Homeland Security DHS, Japan Science and Technology Agency JST and Australian National ICT Australia NICTA recently culminated with the 2nd Summit Series EU-US CyberTrust Workshop over April 25-27th 2007 (report can be found here). The mutual convergence and agreement across the EU, US, Japan and Australia reached in these two workshops (the first held in Nov 2006) on the scope and technical themes for international co-operation now forms a tangible basis for further development. Based on this, the main goal of INCO-TRUST is to realise this co-operation with a detailed organizational and financial framework explicitly targeting international co-operation. The organizational process now requires support for researchers from the TSD communities with well established experience and vision in the area of TSD technologies.
